Well, this wouldn’t be me not talk about last night Show. So, we need to talk about this Oscar.
The Artist winning Best Picture was amazing, an great and well deserved choice since this was a project that comes like a dream. Hollywood is saying “We need to look back at things that one time made us what we are today. Same thing goes for “Hugo” and its five awards.
Jean Dujardin, Octavia Spencer, Christopher Plummer (my tie with Max von Sydow didn’t occur, and I’m crying) all outstanding with their performances but who really stole the show was Meryl Streep and her 3 Oscar (FINALLY!) Happiest moment ever! That compensated some of the disappointments of the show such as the editing Oscar (another year with the same Fincher guys? I’m all for a 4th Oscar to Thelma Schoonmaker); the epic cinematography loss of The Tree of Life to Hugo (c’mon, Robert Richardson already had 2 Oscars for incredible works and Lubezki had the most fantastic cinematography of all, with natural lighting and all); and at last but not least the worst ignorance of the Academy with the award for Best Song to won’t even say the name. Once again their prejudice against Brazilians was the reason why Rio (music composed by Sergio Mendes, Carlinhos Brown) didn’t get the Oscar. Shame, once again! And of course, Harry Potter gets the millions of dollars, the public but no Oscar and even I’m not the biggest fan of the series I would like to see an award given to the spectacular film crew but it didn’t happened.
Billy Crystal was ok, better than last year’s team. The show’s still square, where everybody pleases everybody. The beginning was too damn fast, then it got a nice pace. I wonder how Eddie Murphy would turned out to be with the show if Brett Ratner wasn’t so homophobic and the rest you all know. Ricky Gervais is really the man for this host job but the Oscars are too tight for him, so…
It was a surprising event, Uggie was there barking (so cute!), the screenplays awards were predictable but fair. I wish that Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy could get some award but none, but it was a great proof that Thomas Alfredson/Gary Oldman and company must return for other films with George Smiley and the Karla trilogy and I would love that.
So, this is just my take. What will be yours? I’m thrilled to know.
